Is
Bullying Really A Problem?
Compensation of £850,000
awarded to Helen Green highlights the severe financial penalties
for employers who fail to take bullying
seriously and found to be negligent.
This
case came shortly after more bad news for employers:
the House of Lords ruled in the case of Majrowski that employers
are
vicariously
liable for all types of harassment. An
employee no longer has to have suffered a psychiatric injury, no
prove foreseeability where there is injury, under the Protection
from
Harassment Act 1997.
Causing ill-health and an estimated 18 million working days lost each
year, bullying and harassment is widespread with the private, public
and voluntary sectors all affected. Do you know how to recognise a bullying
problem in your organisation and what to do about it?
A range of statistics leaves little doubt that bullying is at epidemic
proportions:
-
2 million people bullied at work in the UK in a 6-month period [TUC]
-
21% of nurses have been bullied in the last year alone [Royal College
of Nursing Scotland]
-
53% of HR professionals have been bullied [Personnel Today]
